The chain of rescue was visible. What does bitachon ask us to see?
When help arrives through radios, aircraft and trained hands, can I honor every human act without letting the chain hide Hashem?

Chovos Halevavos writes, ‘מה שגזר הבורא — what the Creator decreed.’ In context, Rabbeinu Bachya is describing the extent, character, time and place of events as remaining within Hashem’s decree.
He then places the chain of causes beneath that governance. Bitachon does not ask us to treat skill, preparation or rescue work as imaginary; it asks us not to mistake a cause for the One Who gives causes their reach.

What happened
At about 1 a.m. Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard received a Mayday call from a vessel sinking roughly 140 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico.
A helicopter reached the area about two hours later, and a crew including a rescue swimmer pulled 16 Mexican nationals from the Pacific during an operation lasting about 90 minutes.
Two survivors were in critical condition, one was treated for a suspected shark bite, and only debris—not the boat—had been found.
Authorities believed 11 people remained missing and continued searching roughly 950 square nautical miles overnight; the vessel’s origin, destination and purpose were still unknown.

Return to the news
Sixteen people were brought from open water by a chain of trained effort: a Mayday transmission, dispatchers, an aircrew, a rescue swimmer, hospitals and continuing search teams. Chovos Halevavos does not make those causes unreal. It places them beneath Hashem’s governance. That allows two truths to remain together: human courage deserves recognition, and the means are not the Author of the outcome. We do not know why sixteen were reached while others remained missing, and this source gives us no license to explain it. The avodah begins closer to home: use the doctor, the call, the plan and the capable person seriously—then notice when gratitude to the tool has crowded out awareness of the One Who governs every tool’s reach.
Stay with the thought
The machinery of rescue is visible here because every link can be named: one distress signal, an aircrew launched into darkness, a swimmer entering open water, hospital teams waiting on shore, and American and Mexican services continuing the search.
That visibility can tempt us into one of two errors. We may erase the rescuers by speaking about hashgachah as though courage and training did not matter. Or we may stare only at the machinery and allow the means to become the whole explanation.
Chovos Halevavos asks for a harder, more faithful seeing. The helicopter was real help. The swimmer’s exertion was real chesed. And the entire chain still operated within the reach and limits Hashem gave it.
This reading cannot tell us why sixteen were reached while others remained missing, and it does not turn rescue into evidence of merit. It teaches how to receive help: thank the people fully, use practical means responsibly and let those very means awaken awareness of Hashem rather than replace it.

Take one thing with you
Today, choose one ordinary chain of help—a doctor, driver, teacher or repairman. Thank the person specifically, then say quietly that the cause was real and Hashem remained its Author.
