The picture looked familiar. Had the words outrun what anyone knew?

The question

When an image seems to confirm what I already expect, can my mouth still wait for my heart to know what it is saying?

In the opening chapter of Shaar HaYichud, Rabbeinu Bachya describes wholehearted recognition of Hashem: ‘That the heart and the tongue be in agreement in affirming the unity of the Creator, blessed be He’—שיהיו הלב והלשון שוים ביחוד הבורא יתברך.

The chapter distinguishes repeating accepted words from understanding what one is affirming. Agreement here is not merely strong feeling; the mouth’s declaration must be joined to real inward recognition.

Rabbeinu Bachya is teaching emunah, not journalism. Yet his demand reaches familiar holy speech especially sharply: a sentence may be entirely true while the speaker has not brought his mind into the words.

The news in brief

What happened

On October 25, the Associated Press reported that CNEWS and Franceinfo apologized after airing protest footage from Tirana as live images from France.

CNEWS commentators described masked people in footage labelled Paris as potential rioters, but AP journalists verified that the street was in the Albanian capital.

Franceinfo separately showed Tirana riot police and water cannons as live pictures from Lyon, then corrected the location about three minutes later.

Le Parisien independently reported the CNEWS control-room mix-up and its on-air apology.

Return to the news

The pictures were real, and that made the error harder to feel. A true image with a false place-name invited the mouth to supply a story the heart already expected. Rabbeinu Bachya’s words concern emunah, not broadcasting, yet the news gives their inward demand a sharp mashal: speech becomes whole only when the speaker’s inner knowing stands behind it. In tefillah, I may say a sentence that is entirely true while my mind is still in Tirana and my mouth is announcing Paris. The avodah is not suspicion of every word. It is to let one line of emes travel through understanding before it leaves the lips.

Stay with the thought

Nothing in the pictures was fabricated. The false label did the deeper work: it turned one real scene into evidence for another story. Because the images looked plausible, speech could run ahead of knowledge without sounding uncertain.

AP’s street-level verification and the channels’ corrections restored the missing connection between picture, place and words. The correction matters. But Le Parisien also records a panel response that similar scenes could have occurred in France. A hypothetical resemblance cannot make the original label accurate; what might have been true cannot replace what was actually known.

Rabbeinu Bachya’s subject is Hashem’s unity. The news is only a mashal, but it makes the inward problem visible. I can carry a real Hebrew sentence on my lips while my attention is somewhere else, relying on familiarity to make the words feel inhabited.

This is not a verdict on the presenters or on either protest. It is a smaller cheshbon for me: before I speak with certainty—and especially before I speak to Hashem—have heart, mind and tongue arrived at the same sentence?

A small step, if you choose

Take one thing with you

Choose one familiar line of tefillah today. Read its meaning, pause, then say it once slowly enough for heart and tongue to meet.

A reflection, not a personal halachic ruling.
