They came from six continents. Where does my longing actually point?

The question

When I say I want closeness to Hashem, does that longing choose a direction anywhere in my ordinary day?

Learn the source

In the opening chapter of Shaar Ahavas Hashem, Rabbeinu Bachya describes love of Hashem as כלות הנפש ונטותה בעצמה אל הבורא כדי שתדבק באורו העליון—“The soul’s longing and its own turning toward the Creator, to cleave to His exalted light.”

The line holds two movements together. There is longing, but there is also netiyah: the soul bends and directs itself. Love is not only a feeling that arrives; it gives the person a direction.

This is the final gate of Chovos Halevavos, built after the earlier gates have prepared the inner life. One brief practice does not attain that madreigah. It can, however, reveal whether a stated desire has begun to point an ordinary choice toward Hashem.

The news in brief

What happened

The Times of Israel reported Friday that about 50 self-identified Noahides from around the world gathered in Jerusalem for a November 2–6 congress organized by Brit Olam.

Its reporter attended a reception and described participants who remain distinct from Judaism while saying they seek to live by Torah’s universal principles.

The Jerusalem Post said delegates and community leaders from six continents used the gathering for study and work on shared educational and institutional frameworks.

Brit Olam’s official program listed sessions, visits in Jerusalem and Shilo, a founding charter and a November 6 closing.

Return to the news

The congress does not let us judge the participants' spiritual standing or decide disputed questions of authority. Its usable feature is simpler: people crossed real distance and built a schedule around a stated desire to turn toward the Creator. Rabbeinu Bachya describes ahavas Hashem not merely as warmth but as the soul's direction, after earlier gates have prepared it. My own longing can feel sincere and still remain motionless. The test is not drama. Does a wish for closeness bend one ordinary choice—how I enter a brachah, guard five minutes for learning, or put away a distraction before Shabbos? A feeling may visit. Direction begins when the day gives it somewhere to go.

Stay with the thought

This reading does not decide the Noahide movement’s religious legitimacy, endorse a new authority or tell us anything about an individual participant’s standing before Hashem. Those are not conclusions a news report can supply, and disputed questions do not belong in this unsupervised edition.

One observable feature can still enter the beis midrash as a mashal. People crossed real distance and built several days around a stated spiritual search. The travel and schedule do not prove closeness to Hashem. They show what it looks like when a desire is given a direction outside the feeling itself.

Rabbeinu Bachya’s language turns the question toward us. A person can sincerely say that he wants more connection, more tefillah, more Torah or a less distracted Shabbos. The longing matters, but it may remain suspended until it bends one choice in the day.

The direction need not be dramatic. It may be entering one brachah through its words, protecting five minutes for learning, or putting away a distraction before Shabbos begins. These do not measure a person’s ahavas Hashem or manufacture a madreigah. They simply give the heart’s stated wish somewhere honest to go.

A small step, if you choose

Take one thing with you

Before Shabbos, choose one familiar brachah, tefillah or five minutes of learning and enter it without the phone, simply to give longing one direction.

A reflection, not a personal halachic ruling.
