The rifles were ready. Where was the heart meant to rest?
When I prepare responsibly for what may happen, do I quietly ask the preparation to give me a guarantee that no human cause can give?
Learn the source
In Shaar HaBitachon, Rabbeinu Bachya describes created events as reaching the extent, character, time and place of “what the Creator decreed.” The words do not erase the chain of causes. The discussion that follows places those causes beneath Hashem's governance.
That order matters. The gate requires practical effort, yet the heart does not transfer ultimate authorship to the tool it uses. A physician, an officer, a plan and a locked door can be necessary parts of responsible action without becoming independent powers or promises.
This is not a claim about why the Bondi attack happened or a promise that preparation prevents tragedy. It is an inward distinction: hishtadlus asks what I am responsible to do; bitachon asks where the heart rests after I have done it.

What happened
On November 1, New South Wales' permanent Armed Response Command began operations across Sydney after six months of specialist preparation.
The government said the $94.3 million command would patrol priority locations, major events, crowded public spaces, sporting venues and places of worship, supported by a 24/7 operations center.
At full strength it is planned to include 250 officers and 28 civilian staff; ABC News reported that 60 officers would begin work in November.
Authorities created the command after the December 2025 Bondi Beach terror attack, which killed 15 people during a Jewish holiday celebration. SBS also reported concerns about militarized policing and the need for safeguards.

Return to the news
The command's officers, training and equipment are real hishtadlus, and the courage required if they are called upon is real. Chovos Halevavos does not make a cause unreal; it places the cause beneath Hashem's governance. That distinction reaches ordinary life. I can lock the door, make the appointment, prepare the plan and ask for help without demanding that any one tool carry my heart. Preparedness is a responsibility, not a guarantee. Bitachon does not excuse passivity, and it does not reveal why a tragedy happened. It lets effort remain effort: serious, grateful and bounded, while the outcome is left with Hashem. The question is not whether I prepared. It is what I secretly asked the preparation to promise me.
Stay with the thought
For six months, officers trained with weapons, vehicles, medical care and active-attack scenarios. That preparation honors the seriousness of human life. If danger comes, courage, skill and seconds matter. Naming hashgachah must never become a way to withhold equipment, minimize the officers' responsibility or overlook the public questions that armed policing raises.
Yet preparation carries a temptation of its own. A visible vehicle, a specialist unit or a careful plan can begin to feel like the place where safety itself lives. Rabbeinu Bachya's words return the cause to its proper size. The cause is real; it is not the Author.
That is the bechinah for an ordinary day. I can make the medical appointment, back up the files, ask for advice, prepare the presentation and lock the door. Those are not failures of bitachon. They are often duties. But none can promise the outcome, and asking them to do so leaves the heart patrolling forever.
Bitachon does not make a person careless. It makes care more honest. I do the next responsible thing with gratitude for the people and tools Hashem has placed within reach, and I refuse to make them carry what belongs only with Him.

Take one thing with you
Choose one preparation you have been postponing and take its next practical step today. Then say quietly: this is my hishtadlus; the outcome is with Hashem.

Exact approved corpus excerpt and Torah Lens's original English rendering. The excerpt belongs to Rabbeinu Bachya's teaching that events remain within Hashem's decree in extent, character, time and place; the following discussion places the chain of causes beneath His governance. The gate also requires practical effort and acknowledges the limits of our knowledge of His judgments. Applying that distinction to preparedness is Torah Lens's inward analogy, not a ruling about policing. Textual verification is not rabbinic approval.
