Nineteen members of Congress asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio on 23 September to retain a separate Holocaust-issues envoy and fill the vacancy with an experienced career diplomat. The letter led by Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Brad Schneider asks for a dedicated, full-time career diplomat following Ellen Germain’s departure. It argues that negotiating Holocaust-era compensation and property restitution requires expertise distinct from combating contemporary antisemitism. A real disagreement, not a completed merger
Jewish Insider reports that Agudath Israel of America and several other organizations sought a new full-time Holocaust envoy, while the Orthodox Union, Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters and others supported combining the positions. Supporters argued that Holocaust denial and present-day antisemitism overlap and that ambassador-level leadership could strengthen the work. The report said the merger had not been formalized. These are differing organizational positions, not a single Jewish communal verdict.
